About the Peterson Health Technology Institute
The Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI) provides independent evaluations of innovative healthcare technologies to improve health and lower costs. Through its rigorous, evidence-based research, PHTI analyzes the clinical benefits and economic impact of digital health solutions, as well as their effects on health equity, privacy, and security. These evaluations inform decisions for providers, patients, payers, and investors, accelerating the adoption of high-value technology in healthcare. PHTI was founded in 2023 by the Peterson Center on Healthcare.
About the Opportunity
PHTI is seeking a Principal, Assessment (“Principal”) to support its initiative focused on increasing the utilization of high-value digital health solutions. The Principal will be responsible for overseeing the clinical assessment function for all PHTI evaluations. This includes managing health technology assessment partners, working closely with clinical advisors, analyzing and interpreting clinical evidence, and producing public-facing reports. This position will also oversee the implementation of PHTI’s value assessment framework to ensure the assessments follow the published framework and to update the framework over time with input from assessment experts and other stakeholders.
More specifically, the responsibilities include:
Oversee Clinical and Economic Assessment Output
- Oversee the application of the ICER-PHTI value assessment framework to the clinical and economic assessment process.
- Employ the ICER-PHTI value assessment framework to perform clinical assessment of selected digital technologies.
- Work with ICER experts throughout assessment process to ensure evaluations are performed consistent with the framework.
- Manage external assessment partners
- Work closely with assessment partners to scope evaluations, finalize PICOTS criteria, and publish research protocols.
- Oversee partners during the systematic literature review and data extraction process.
- Interpret clinical evidence, analyze findings from the systematic literature review, develop key findings, and lead a team in drafting the clinical section of the report.
- Review and validate the other report findings and oversee integration of clinical findings throughout the full report.
- Partner with other PHTI functions and external partners to continual improve processes with the goals of enhancing speed, communication, and quality.
- Coordinate with clinical advisors
- Lead calls with clinical advisors to identify and prioritize outcomes measures.
- Seek input from the clinical advisors on report findings and clinical analysis.
Evolve Assessment Function
- Identify opportunities, in conjunction with assessment partners, for process improvements that drive efficiency and accuracy of output.
- Source, evaluate, and maintain a list of potential new assessment partners.
- Integrate new technologies, methods, and partners into the PHTI assessment process to continue to evolve and improve execution.
Value Assessment Framework Evolution
- Direct the evolution of the ICER-PHTI value assessment framework to integrate learnings from completed reports to refine the key areas of the clinical, economic, security, and usability domains.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs), vendors, and internal leadership to identify areas of evolution of the ICER-PHTI value assessment framework.
- Solicit feedback from various stakeholders (including advisory groups and the public) and address accordingly.
- Ensure framework alignment with PHTI’s leadership and mission.
- In conjunction with experts and PHTI leadership, determine the timing and process to be utilized for ongoing framework review and adjustments.
Administration, Culture, and Management Responsibilities
- Possess a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of PHTI’s assessment function and have the capacity to describe it clearly, both internally and externally.
- Responsible for the professional development, support, and management of two to three full-time employees.
- Oversee project management, budget monitoring, and external vendor/stakeholder relations for the assessment function.
- Must maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and vigilance regarding conflicts of interest at all times.
About the Successful Candidate
The successful candidate will be an accomplished healthcare professional, committed to transforming the U.S. healthcare system, with experience in or working with one or more major segments of the healthcare system (payers, providers, pharmaceuticals, health technology). Candidates should be strategic, a strong collaborator, interested in developing staff, and able to bring the skills to build and enhance the assessment function within PHTI.
Professional Experience
- An advanced degree with a minimum of 15+ years of direct healthcare work and related experience such as with healthcare economics, evaluation, management consulting, and/or project management for large-scale healthcare research initiatives.
- Strong technical expertise in digital health solutions, health economics and outcomes research, (HEOR) and/or related assessment methods.
- Demonstrated skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis methods.
- Able to plan and think strategically, set realistic goals and objectives, balance multiple priorities, manage project details and accommodate changes.
- A team builder and leader who can develop, mentor, and grow staff in a collaborative and solutions focused environment.
- Commitment to ensuring accuracy and high quality of research, findings and work products produced by team.
- Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate well with colleagues and organizational leadership as the DHT assessment expert.
- A nimble learner who is self-directed, intellectually curious, adaptable and enjoys facing new situations and the challenge of ambiguity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the personal presence to represent the Center in diverse forums and organizational relationships.
- In order to build productive relationships across the organization and to ensure effective collaboration, this role requires in-person presence in accordance with the organization’s hybrid schedule of working in the office three days per week (Monday/Tuesday/Thursday).
Salary and Benefits
We anticipate that the starting base salary range for this position will be $215,000 to $235,000, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition, we offer a generous benefits package designed to support employee health and well-being, including comprehensive health insurance, a substantial 401k match, paid time off, a hybrid work schedule and other flexible work policies.
