AI Applications in Healthcare Workshop Series

Exploring the requirements for safe, effective, and scalable adoption of AI to improve healthcare.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping healthcare delivery and administration. To realize AI’s promise of expanding clinical capacity, improving patient outcomes, and reducing cost, stakeholders must address critical questions about evidence standards, performance monitoring, regulatory frameworks, and market incentives.

The Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI) is convening a three-part workshop series in Washington, D.C., bringing together senior leaders from health systems, health plans, technology developers, academia, investment firms, and federal agencies to explore pathways for responsible AI adoption across healthcare.

This workshop series represents part of PHTI’s broader commitment to shaping the evidence and policy landscape for emerging health technologies. By convening diverse stakeholders for substantive dialogue, PHTI is identifying actionable pathways to leverage innovation to improve health and lower costs.

Workshop Focus Areas

Adopting AI for Care Delivery

November 2025

AI-enabled health technologies have the potential to expand clinical capacity and improve patient access to care. Assuming that the technology is capable, what will be required for it to be adopted at scale in the U.S. healthcare market? What kinds of evidence, performance monitoring, and regulatory environment would build confidence in these tools for purchasers, providers, and patients?

Read the workshop summary.

AI Applications in Healthcare Administrative Functions

January 2026

Emerging AI tools offer the potential to reduce administrative costs, accelerate payment cycles, and promote appropriate high-value care. How can AI be leveraged to simplify administrative processes by removing wasteful steps, while improving the efficiency of functions that are essential for oversight and accountability? What policy interventions can mitigate inflationary risks and ensure that AI adoption delivers net savings rather than cost escalation?

Payment Models for AI in Healthcare

May 2026

This workshop will examine reimbursement models needed to support high-value AI adoption, exploring how current payment approaches can evolve or whether new constructs are required to align incentives for AI deployment that improves outcomes and system efficiency.

Key Themes

Critical enablers for scaling high-value AI adoption for care delivery include:

  • Evidence standards that reflect real-world care baselines and scale with clinical risk
  • Performance metrics focused on meaningful patient health outcomes with adaptive safety standards
  • Deployment strategies that prioritize patients with greatest need and limited access
  • Market and policy frameworks that align innovation incentives with quality improvement and cost reduction

As the series continues, additional insights will be incorporated to provide comprehensive guidance across clinical, administrative, and payment domains.
